How to choose the size of an oversized hoodie

Kvinna i Gårdisto Hoodie i sand sitter på däcket av en segelbåt

An oversized hoodie already has room built in. The most common mistake is to go up a size on top of that – then the sleeves run too long and the shoulders end up halfway down the upper arm. The rule of thumb for the Gårdisto Hoodie is simple: take your usual size for the fit we intended, one size down if you want it classic.

The safest way to choose is to measure a sweater you already like wearing. Lay it flat. Measure the chest straight across from side seam to side seam just below the armholes, the length from the highest point of the shoulder at the neck straight down to the hem, and the sleeve from the shoulder seam down to the end of the cuff. Then compare with our garment measurements: S has a chest width of 59 cm and a length of 67.5 cm, M 61 and 69.5 cm, L 63 and 71.5 cm. The sleeves are 57, 58 and 59 cm. Small deviations of a couple of centimetres occur.

Two things to keep in mind. The hoodie is unisex – the same measurements apply whoever wears it, so go by the numbers, not by what you usually take in women's or men's sizes. And if you are tall, the length is what decides – L is 71.5 cm – so measure the length of a sweater you think sits well and compare.

The fabric is extra heavy and brushed on the inside. Washed at 30 degrees and dried flat it keeps its size – it is the tumble dryer that shrinks cotton, not the wash. So choose the size by how it should sit on day one; it will sit the same a year on.

Torn between two sizes? Take the smaller if you want it closer to the body, the larger if you want it as a coat over a thick sweater. And if it still goes wrong, you have 30-day returns.
